TBE is a group of UCLA undergraduate students from different backgrounds, ranging from Microbiology majors to English majors, who come together to inspire scientific curiosity in the youth of Los Angeles. We visit local middle schools weekly and guide students through the scientific method, making it relevant through the lens of classic research paradigms as well as current research! Being a leader within TBE requires only a heart of service, a fun-loving spirit, and a willingness to grow. (Notice: no science background required!)
A child’s mind is a wonderful thing, and giving students the proper avenue to pursue their creative endeavors is the reason this club exists. As college students who’ve been through it all, we understand that textbook science can sometimes be boring and inefficient. By fostering curiosity in our club, we help the students learn about the scientific method from a first hand experience. They choose their own projects based on their own passions and work at their own pace—we merely guide them along the way.
To middle school students, studying science can seem like an insurmountable feat. Without proper resources and guidance, students’ interest in science can be forced to take a backseat. We aim to provide underserved students with the means to develop a passion for STEM fields. We want to help these students see that science, though difficult at times, can be fun and rewarding.
TBE is not only dedicated to service, but to community. TBE’s mentors bond over retreats, hangouts, and an annual banquet, including kids in the fun with bonfires and Park Day, too! Though we prioritize giving back to our city, we also emphasize growing our family on the UCLA campus.
